Salvador Dali was commissioned to do two portfolios associated with the Jewish religion: "Aliyah" in 1968 to commemorate the 29th anniversary of the state of Israel and "The Twelve Tribes of Israel" in 1972. The "Song of Songs of King Solomon" could also be put in this category but it has more general biblical ties than just Judaism so we will discuss this after the other two.
"Aliyah" is comprised of 25 colored lithographs after original gouaches and if you are fortunate to have the complete set intact you would also have the text by Gerson Cohen and the introduction by David Ben Gurion. The color and the detail of these lithographs shows the wonderful drawing ability and superb artistry of the late Spanish Master. This set kept intact visually tells the story of the forming of the state of Israel.
The total triage consists of 275 plus proofs published by Shorewood Press in New York.
"The Twelve Tribes of Israel" is also in a portfolio with colophon and introduction by Aba Eban and consists of 13 original etchings. The frontispiece illustrates all 12 tribes circular on the sheet. Each of the tribes is masterfully etched as Dali was wonderful in this technique of printmaking. This beautiful set consists of 460 prints plus proofs and was published by Transworld Art.
“The Song of Songs of Solomon” consists of 12 original etchings with gold dust added in a portfolio with a medallion on the cover. The portfolio edition is numbered on the colophon page and each etching is signed but no number. The edition of 200 was done with no portfolio and each print is signed and numbered.
The total triage for the “Song of Songs” consists of 520 total prints.
All three sets are very much in demand.
